Areas We Cover Around Leicester

AJH Builders works throughout Leicester and Leicestershire. Site visits and written quotations are free everywhere on this list.

Where we work

Grouped by part of the county, because the building stock — and therefore the work — changes as you move out from the city centre.

Leicester city and inner suburbs

The Victorian and Edwardian streets closest to the centre — mostly solid-wall brick property where repointing, damp and loft conversions come up again and again.

  • Leicester city centre
  • Clarendon Park
  • Stoneygate
  • Knighton
  • Highfields
  • Evington
  • Aylestone

North Leicester

The 1930s to 1970s estates north of the river, where garage conversions and rear extensions are the usual way of adding space.

  • Belgrave
  • Beaumont Leys
  • Birstall
  • Thurmaston
  • Syston
  • Anstey

East Leicester and the villages

Post-war and modern housing running out towards the A47, where garages are integral and roofs are often trussed.

  • Humberstone
  • Hamilton
  • Thurnby
  • Scraptoft
  • Houghton on the Hill
  • Great Glen

West Leicester

The western suburbs and the villages beyond the M1 — a mix of inter-war semis and newer detached property.

  • Braunstone
  • Braunstone Town
  • Glenfield
  • Kirby Muxloe
  • Leicester Forest East
  • Groby

South Leicestershire

The commuter belt down the A426 and A5199 — extensions, annexes and self-build plots.

  • Oadby
  • Wigston
  • Blaby
  • Glen Parva
  • Narborough
  • Enderby
  • Countesthorpe
  • Whetstone

Wider Leicestershire

Larger projects, new builds and full renovations are taken on across the county.

  • Loughborough
  • Hinckley
  • Lutterworth
  • Market Harborough
  • Melton Mowbray
  • Broughton Astley

If your area is not on the list it is still worth a call. Larger projects such as new builds, extensions and full renovations are taken on further afield; day-to-day repairs are kept closer to Leicester so that we can respond properly.

Local knowledge

What the buildings tell us

Solid-wall brick near the centre

Clarendon Park, Stoneygate, Highfields and the West End are largely solid-wall Victorian and Edwardian brick. No cavity means damp shows differently, and pointing needs to be soft enough to breathe — lime rather than a hard cement mix.

Cut roofs versus trusses

Pre-war property around Aylestone, Knighton and Evington usually has a cut roof with usable head height, so a loft conversion is straightforward. Estates built from the 1970s tend to have trussed roofs, which need the structure replacing.

Integral garages out of town

Oadby, Wigston, Glenfield, Birstall and the newer village developments are full of integral and attached garages too narrow for a modern car — which is exactly why garage conversions are so common there.

FAQs

Questions about the areas we cover

Travel, coverage limits and working on older property in conservation areas.

Is there a charge for a site visit further out from Leicester?

No. Site visits and written quotations are free across every area listed on this page. For larger projects further into the county — Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray — travel is accounted for within the quoted price rather than charged as an extra.

Do you work outside Leicestershire?

For larger projects such as new builds and full renovations, yes. Day-to-day repair and maintenance work is kept closer to Leicester so that we can respond properly. If you are just outside the areas listed, call and ask — it is usually a straightforward yes or no.

Do you work in conservation areas and on older property?

Yes. Much of the housing stock closest to the city centre is solid-wall Victorian and Edwardian brick, and a good deal of it sits in a conservation area. That changes what is permitted externally and what mortar, brick and detailing are appropriate — which is why repointing in lime and matching existing brickwork are part of what we do rather than an afterthought.
